The Washington Capitals saw top-pairing defenseman Jakob Chychrun skate only two shifts against the New York Rangers on Tuesday night.
Chychrun played just 1:49 of ice time before leaving for the locker room. Washington announced early in the second period that Chychrun had suffered an upper-body injury and would not return.

Per ESPN’s Emily Kaplan, Chychrun appeared to be holding something on the left side of his body near the end of his last shift before he left the game.
Spencer Carbery told reporters that there was “a little concern because we’re obviously missing Matty Roy as well. I don’t know the extent of [the injury].”
Roy, another top-four defender the Capitals brought in over the offseason, has been out since injuring himself in the first game of the year. He is expected to return, however, at some point during the current three-game homestand.
Chychrun had played the season’s first seven games on the club’s first pair next to John Carlson. He averaged 21:14 of ice time per game coming into the game against New York, the second highest on the Capitals.
The 26-year-old defenseman has four points (2g, 2a) in seven games to start the year. He played in all 82 games for the Ottawa Senators last season.
