Both Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin hit incredible milestones on Wednesday. During the Pittsburgh Penguins’ 6-5 overtime win over the Buffalo Sabres, Sidney Crosby hit the 1,600 points milestone while Evgeni Malkin scored his 500th career goal.
No. 1,600 for Crosby came from a secondary assist via a Bryan Rust power-play goal, narrowing the Sabres’ lead to 2-1 in the first period. Crosby became only the tenth player in NHL history to reach 1,600 career points.
Crosby also became the fifth-fastest player to hit the mark, doing so in only 1,277 games. The only players to get to 1,600 quicker were Wayne Gretzky (667 games), Mario Lemieux (812), Marcel Dionne (1,164), and Jaromir Jagr (1,274). Jagr was the last player to to reach the milestone, just over 13 years ago, on October 6, 2011.
In the third period of Wednesday’s game, Malkin became the 48th player to score 500 career goals. Sliding on his rear across the slot, the Russian forward didn’t give up on the play, managing to lift the puck past Sabres goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen. The tally, his second of the night, gave the Penguins a 4-3 lead in the third period. Malkin’s 500th goal came on his 1,150th game in the NHL.
“It’s not easy,” Malkin said postgame per NHL.com. “It’s a long way to, like, score 500. I’m glad to do it tonight. And, like, finally. Now, I’m more relaxed. First time I want to say, probably, about myself, I’m proud of myself.”
Crosby, naturally, won the game in overtime, burying a one-timer at the far post.
Both Crosby and Malkin will be first-ballot Hockey Hall of Famers when they retire. To become the legends they are, the two Penguins forwards have found success against every team in the league, especially the the Washington Capitals.
Fueled by the Ovechkin-Crosby rivalry, Capitals and Penguins games have been intense and high-scoring over the past two decades. Whether it was Crosby matching Ovechkin for a hat trick or Malkin seemingly deking around every defender on the ice to score, the Penguins stars have delivered when the spotlight shined brightest.
While the two players have produced huge against the Capitals, there are several teams they’ve put up even bigger numbers against.

Malkin has scored the sixth most goals of his career against the Capitals, hitting the back of the net 26 times in 62 career games against Washington. Like Crosby, Malkin has seen his biggest numbers against the Islanders where he’s scored 35 goals in 78 games.
The same can be said for Ovechkin. The Capitals captain has seen a huge amount of success against the Penguins during his career, but there are a few other teams against whom he’s found even more O.
