The Washington Capitals got their first victory of the season over previously-undefeated Vegas. Now they’ll look for their first winning streak of the year against the still-undefeated Dallas Stars.

Charlie Lindgren will return to the net after losing his Opening Night start against New Jersey. Beyond that, the Capitals’ lineup from Tuesday will have no changes.

Dallas comes into the game 4-0-0, showing off a stingy defense that has only given up five goals total this season. Goaltender Jake Oettinger signed an eight-year, $66 million contract extension earlier in the day that will pay him $8.25 million per season. Backup Casey DeSmith, however, will get tonight’s start.

The Capitals-Stars game can be watched on Monumental Sports Network. Puck drop is shortly after 7 pm. Joe Beninati and Craig Laughlin have the call.

The Capitals have not beat the stars in DC since March 20, 2018. Don’t look at the lineup or it might make you cry.

Tunnel Shenanigans

1st Period

Puck is dropped.

Capitals start their fourth line, Duhaime-Dowd-Raddysh, and Fehervary-McIlrath on D.

Caps go to the power play 2:51 into the game as Ilya Lyubushkin takes a two-minute minor for cross-checking.

🚨 1-0 Dallas Stars. DAL SHG: Colin Blackwell (1). Unassisted. Time: 12:19.

Tom Wilson turns it over along the boards. John Carlson steps up and can’t control the chip at the blue line, allowing Blackwell to race in alone on Lindgren.

Heavy cross-check from Andrew Mangiapane sends Stars defenseman Brendan Smith to the locker room holding his right arm and shoulder. Mangiapane was given a two-minute minor.

The Caps penalty killers nearly scored twice in the period.

At intermission: After a sleepy first period, the Stars are leading in shots 7 to 6 and 5v5 attempts 9 to 6.

2nd Period

Puck is dropped.

🚨 1-1 tie. WSH goal: Tom Wilson (3). Assists: P. Dubois (2), C. McMichael (2). Time: 0:55.

Tom Wilson takes a bump set from PLD and beats DeSmith in the slot. That’s goals in three straight for Tom who is going to hit 30 this year.

Protas gets hit by a puck that goes into the bench. He was flexing his right arm.

Brendan Smith is back on the ice after his first period injury.

🚨 2-1 Washington Capitals. WSH goal: Dylan Strome (3). Assists: J. Carlson (3), A. Protas (1). Time: 06:15.

Strome scores on a low point shot, finding a hole past DeSmith. Caps take the 2-1 lead after getting two goals in 5:50. Per Capitals PR, Strome’s three-game point streak (2g-2a–4p) to open 2024-25 is the longest from the start of a season in his career.

🚨 2-2 tie. DAL goal: Jason Robertson (2). Assists: R. Hintz (2), W. Johnston (4). Time: 13:09.

Wyatt Johnson shoots through a screen and Robertson finds the loose puck in his skates. A screened Lindgren was helpless to do anything there.

🚨 3-2 Washington Capitals. WSH goal: Taylor Raddysh (1). Unassisted. Time: 17:19.

Raddysh finds pay dirt after shooting through two screens made by his linemates, Nic Dowd and Brandon Duhaime. Dowd gave him a huge hug at the bench congratulating him.

At intermission: Caps lead in shots 18 to 14 and are out-attempting the Stars in 5v5 shot attempts 18 to 14 as well.

3rd Period

Puck is dropped.

Three huge blocks by Martin Fehervary down the stretch allow the Caps to hold on in the final two minutes while the Stars were playing 6-on-5.

Caps win 3-2. WSH outshoots Dallas 27 to 24 but the Stars out-attempted the Caps 42 to 35 at 5v5.

Another win against one of the west’s undefeated best: Capitals beat Stars 3-2
