The Washington Capitals made an exciting announcement on a day that many Caps fans already consider a hockey holiday: 8/19.

Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom will reunite and become a duo once again for a double bobblehead giveaway night. Backstrom effectively retired last season when he stepped away from the team.
The Capitals revealed the Backvechkin Bobble in a release of the team’s promotional calendar for the 2024-25 campaign. Partially buried in the morass of giveaways, thematic games, and special ticket offers were three separate Era Nights during their upcoming 50th anniversary season — all of which feature dual bobbleheads.
Fans looking to pick up the Ovechstrom Bobble can get one during the club’s March 7, 2025 game against the Detroit Red Wings for what the team has nicknamed the 50th Anniversary Era Night – Rock The Red.
The bobble of Ovechkin and Backstrom together is believed to be the first since 2019, when FOCO made a (now sold-out) bobblehead of them holding up the Stanley Cup.
Tangentially related, the team also created incredible Ovechkin/Backstrom salt and pepper shakers as special ticket offer during the 2022-23 season — hockey tchotchkes that I may or may not own. (But on an aside, thank you for always adding the perfect taste to my hard-boiled eggs, Salty Ovi.)
The two other bobblehead giveaways the Capitals have planned will be special, too. For the The Dot.com Era Night on February 1, 2025 against the Winnipeg Jets, the Screaming Eagle Caps from the late ’90s will be celebrated with a Peter Bondra and Olie Kolzig dual bobblehead.
A presumably mustachioed Rod Langway and Mike Gartner will be paired together in clay (or resin?) on December 14, 2024 against the Buffalo Sabres for the Coming of Age Era Night — a name that reminds me personally of ill-fitting khakis, awkward dancing, and semi-bad decisions that I knew were bad but I made them anyway.
