Braden Holtby is back on the ice with the Washington Capitals, but in a new role.

Holtby is serving as a guest coach and help out Capitals’ goaltending coach Scott Murray during Capitals Development Camp, which runs Tuesday through July 6.

There are five goaltenders who will receive tutelage from the 2016 Vezina Trophy winner at MedStar Capitals Iceplex including two recent draft picks — Antoine Keller and Nicholas Kempf — and three free agents: Mason Beaupit, Collin MacKenzie, and Jack Watson.

Holtby. rocking a Capitals sweat suit, gloves, and hat, was observed talking to the group as they prepped for a drill. He also kept in close contact with Murray throughout the skate.

Holtby’s participation at Development Camp comes after he was spotted at Training Camp last fall observing on-ice sessions and chatting with players. The Capitals did not announce any official role for the former netminder and Holtby would not comment when asked by RMNB if he was working with the team after an autograph appearance last December.

Holtby has not played since suiting up in 24 games for the Dallas Stars during the 2021-22 season. His last official appearance in the NHL was on March 4, 2022.

Holtby and his family returned to the DC area shortly after his stint with the Stars. He’s made appearances at charity events including a Laughlin Family Foundation golf tournament in September 2022 and the Alzner Foundation’s Swing Into Summer softball game in June. He also has been spotted multiple times at Nationals Park and remains a big baseball fan.
