Alex Ovechkin scores 840th career goal, a power-play strike against Penguins

Alex Ovechkin is back on the board against the Capitals’ biggest rival.

Ovechkin potted his 840th career goal, finding a loose puck on the opposite side of the crease. Wide open, Ovechkin beat Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Tristan Jarry for his 18th goal of the season.

Ovechkin’s power-play goal gave the Capitals a 2-0 lead over their biggest rival 30 secinds into the second period.

Fighting for the puck in front of the net, Dylan Strome appeared to knock the puck off Jarry’s pads and right over to Ovechkin who had snuck down the left side.

Ovechkin has now scored 10 goals in his last 15 games. He trails Wayne Gretzky by 54 for a share of the NHL’s all-time goals record.

The goal marked Ovechkin’s 41st career goal against the Penguins and his 25th tally ever in Pittsburgh — the most of any player all-time.
