The Washington Capitals are in Detroit, MI tonight to finish an early week back-to-back against the Red Wings.
Coming off an absurdly fun 6-3 victory over the Ottawa Senators, the Capitals will look to double their pleasure and their standings points in this two-game series with another win, keeping their meager playoff dreams alive.
The Capitals will sport the same lineup as Monday with the only change being Darcy Kuemper in net.
Tonight’s game is airing on Monumental Sports Network 2. Joe Beninati and Craig Laughlin will have the call. Puck drop is shortly after 7 pm.

1st Period
Charlie Lindgren will oppose Alex Lyon in net. Protas-McMichael-Mathan and Sandin-Carlson get the start.
🚨 1-0 Red Wings. Shayne Gostisbehere with a big shot from the top of the right circle past Charlie Lindgren to put the Red Wings up first. Veleno and Perron with the assists. Time of goal 5:45.
Highway robbery by Charlie Lindgren as he makes a point-blank stick save on Lucas Raymond right in front of the net on a one-timer.
An Ethan Bear turnover gives the Red Wings a breakaway, but Lindgren stands tall again.
Robby Fabbri scores, but its washed out. His initial shot beat Lindgren but hit the post. The puck then ricocheted out and he caught it with his hand. He tried to drop it and push it in with the blade of his stick but he never made contact.
🚨 2-0 Red Wings. Red Wings hustle to a loose puck and Lucas Raymond scores wide open in front of the net. Time of goal 16:20.
Dylan Strome to the box for high-sticking David Perron at 19:00.
The Capitals were outshot 12 to 5 and out-attempted 26 to 13 at five-on-five.
The Caps look tired and overwhelmed. They’re lucky they’re not down more goals. Lindgren has bailed them out multiple times with ten bell saves.
2nd Period
Puck is dropped. The Red Wings will start the period with one minute left on a power play. Red Wings zing the puck around and put several shots on net but can’t score.
🚨 2-1 Red Wings. Hendrix Lapierre scores on a bit of a broken play. Alex Ovechkin held the puck just long enough to shovel it to him wide open in the crease. Lapierre just poked it home. It’s his third goal in the last two games with the Capitals. Time of goal 2:09.
🚨 3-1 Red Wings. Joel Edmundson turnover. Joe Veleno dances around Ethan Bear to score on Lindgren from the slot. Time of goal 4:44.
Michael Sgarbossa to the box for tripping Patrick Kane at 6:46.
🚨 4-1 Red Wings. Shayne Gostisbehere snaps a shot past Lindgren from the middle of the circles. The Red Wings are snapping the puck through the seams with ease. Time of goal 9:01.
Lapierre nearly scores on a semi-breakaway but the puck rolls off his stick on the shot. He appears to partially slam the Capitals bench door in frustration. Great play by him though using his speed to create the chance.
🚨 4-2 Red Wings. It’s a SCOARbossa! Mike Sgarbossa spins and scores with a shot from the right circle. The Caps aren’t dead yet! Time of goal 16:38.
Jeff Petry interferes with John Carlson. He goes to the box at 18:32. It’s the Capitals’ first power play of the night.
🚨 5-2 Red Wings. John Carlson pinches waaaaaaaay up on the power play and turns it over. The Red Wings win a battle along the side wall and turn it up ice. JT Compher scores shorthanded. The Caps felt like they were mounting a comeback until this moment. Time of goal 19:47. Absolutely back-breaking goal.
The Red Wings are outshooting the Capitals 23 to 11.
3rd Period
Puck is dropped.
Ethan Bear to the box for interfering Joe Veleno at 2:41.
🚨 6-2 Red Wings. Daniel Sprong to Robby Fabbri for the tap-in on the resulting power play. Pinpoint passing. Time of goal 4:31.
Pierrick Dube draw a tripping penalty on Olli Maatta at 5:23. He’s currently smarting at the Capitals bench.
🚨 6-3 Red Wings. Max Pacioretty scores on the power play, tapping home a rebound created by an Alex Ovechkin one-timer. That’s just Pacioretty’s third goal since getting into the lineup. Time of goal 7:09.
🚨 7-3 Red Wings. Alex DeBrincat scores on a beautiful passing play. I’d say it was a three-on-two but I’m not sure if NAK was trying to defend or go flower to flower like he’s a bumble bee. I’m guessing that one is gonna be an iPad session with Spencer Carbery. Time of goal 11:49.
🚨 8-3 Red Wings. A layup for Dylan Larkin. Time of goal 14:10.
The Red Wings were just paying tribute to Ovechkin with the score 🙃 Red Wings outshoot the Capitals 31 to 21.
