Spencer Carbery provides unfortunate injury update on Martin Fehervary: ‘We’re looking at a week-to-week situation’

The Washington Capitals hit the ice for an optional skate at MedStar Capitals Iceplex on Monday, a day before they’re set to do battle with the New Jersey Devils. Defenseman Martin Fehervary, who left Saturday night’s game in Montreal with a lower-body injury, was not present.

Capitals head coach Spencer Carbery was asked to provide an update on Fehervary during his post-skate media availability. The rookie bench boss did not have good news.

“I think we’re looking at probably a week-to-week situation,” Carbery said. “Not something where it could be any day. It’s probably week-to-week, whether it’s one, two. That’s what we’re looking at.”

The first-pairing defenseman was spotted on crutches after the team’s win on Saturday. The young Slovak blueliner was injured on his second shift of the game after taking an awkward fall behind the Capitals’ net and twisting his left leg.

Fehervary skated just 1:36 of ice time in his two shifts before retreating to the locker room. Carbery was asked how his absence would impact the team moving forward.

“It hurts because Marty does a lot for us playing with John, plays a lot of minutes,” he said. “Especially, five-on-five of being able to handle those top lines. But, the good news is it gives an opportunity to [Alex Alexeyev], [Ethan Bear]. We do have some depth there of guys that are chomping at the bit to get into the lineup. We’ll rely on that for the foreseeable future.”

Fehervary has previously missed five games due to a different lower-body injury and one game due to an upper-body injury earlier this season.
