The Washington Capitals returned to the ice for practice on Thursday after a 6-3 loss to the Colorado Avalanche two days before. Spencer Carbery also hosted a tape session where he presented two of the greatest Capitals players of all time, Alex Ovechkin and John Carlson, with gifts for recent accomplishments.
Here’s the transcript of what Carbery said to the team.
Spencer Carbery: Some recognition that has been — not a long time coming — but something that the organization wanted to present. First, let me get out of the way here. Mr. Alex Ovechkin on 1,500 points. This is from the organization. A gold puck right here. 1,500 NHL points. Congratulations.
One more. Another massive achievement. Mr. John Carlson. 500 NHL assists right there.
Pretty cool and I think something I don’t know how many of you guys have looked at the list of players that are on those lists of 500 assists, 1,500 career points, it’s pretty impressive when you take a step back and think about the accomplishments in a career and the company and the names that are on those lists, it’s amazing. So congratulations to you guys once again.
Entire team applauds.
Judging by a photo the team shared on social media, the Capitals’ presented a gold puck to Ovechkin and a silver one to Carlson.

Ovechkin became the 16th player in NHL history to hit 1,500 points on December 7, 2023, against the Dallas Stars. Ovi registered a secondary assist on a Dylan Strome power-play goal — his second of the night.
Carlson hit 500 assists on January 5 against the Carolina Hurricanes with a secondary assist on another Strome goal.
Carlson is only the 34th rearguard in NHL history to hit the 500-assist milestone. He’s one of only three Capitals players to hit 500 assists joining Nicklas Backstrom (762) and Alex Ovechkin (680).
