The Hershey Bears squared off with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on Monday night in the third and decisive game of their first-round series in this year’s Calder Cup Playoffs. The Bears forced the Game Three with a 2-1 victory on Sunday night.
With just barely over 90 seconds remaining in regulation the Bears found themselves in a two-goal hole. And then something amazing happened.
Garrett Pilon struck first as Hershey pulled Pheonix Copley for an extra skater and then just over 40 seconds later Brett Leason jammed home the tying marker to send the game to overtime.

Bobby Nardella started the first clutch goal off with a crisp pass to his defense mate Lucas Johansen. Johansen then sent a beautiful cross-ice feed to Pilon who one-timed a blast past goaltender Tommy Nappier.
On the second tally, Aliaksei Protas picked up a loose puck and fed Mike Vecchione, who in turn fed veteran blueliner Cody Franson at the point. Franson let go a blast that was deflected in front and eventually pounced on by Leason, forcing an extra frame.
Unfortunately, the good times did not last forever as the Penguins’ Alex Nylander struck a little over eight minutes into overtime and ended the Bears’ 2021-22 season.

Compounding the sad matters, only minutes later Carter Verhaeghe would score for the Florida Panthers as they beat the Capitals in overtime of Game Five in the NHL Playoffs.

With the Bears now knocked out, we can expect the Caps to call up a few “black aces” to help with the NHL playoff run for as long as it may continue. Head coach Peter Laviolette told NHL.com’s Tom Gulitti that the discussion on who exactly will be arriving from Hershey would take place on Tuesday.
The list of players that received some NHL experience this season could be a good indication of who gets chosen. That list includes goaltenders Pheonix Copley and Zach Fucale, defensemen Alexander Alexeyev and Lucas Johansen, and forwards Mike Vecchione, Beck Malenstyn, Garrett Pilon, Mike Sgarbossa, Brett Leason, Joe Snively, and Aliaksei Protas.
