Longtime Capitals defenseman Mike Green retired on Wednesday after 15 seasons in the NHL.
The Capitals created a tribute video for the two-time All-Star defenseman and Norris Trophy finalist in honor of the announcement.
“Congratulations to @GreenLife52 on your fantastic career and thank you for a decade of great memories on and off the ice in DC,” the Capitals wrote. “We wish you all the best in your next adventure!”

The tribute video spans Green’s entire career in Washington from getting selected 29th overall in the 2004 NHL Draft to saluting the DC faithful his final season in Washington (2015). Green is shown setting the all-time NHL record for consecutive games with a goal (8) as a defenseman to scoring a playoff overtime goal against the New York Rangers in 2013.
The Capitals also tweeted the graphic of the original Young Guns poster featuring Green with Alex Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom, and Alex Semin.

Green’s wife Courtney also shared this sweet message on Instagram, which included photos and video from the couple’s time in Detroit.
“The closing of a chapter is always bittersweet. I didn’t think I’d be so emotional about Mike retiring, but I’ve been crying on and off all morning,” she wrote. “My luv, I am so incredibly proud and humbled by the physical and emotional strength, endurance, integrity, and compassion that you have navigated your career with. Thank you for all of the adventure, fun, travel, and wonderful people you’ve brought into our lives through the hockey community. I love you infinitely and am so excited for what’s to come for you, for us and for our family. Here’s to writing the next chapter my luv. We adore you!!”
