The Washington Capitals named Garnet Hathaway as its 2019-20 nominee for the King Clancy Memorial Trophy on Monday. During his first year in Washington, Hathaway, a hardworking winger who spent most of his time on the fourth line, devoted a large portion of his time away from the rink to charity.
The trophy is awarded annually “to the player who best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice and has made a noteworthy humanitarian contribution in his community.”
Near the beginning of the season, Hathaway launched Hath’s Heroes that provided first responders free tickets to Capitals games. Hathaway also made a visit to the Arlington County Fire Station. Hathaway was inspired by his namesake and great grandfather, Garnet Mcelroy, who was a firefighter in Winnipeg.

A quick hit of other programs Hathaway supported include the team’s Courage Caps skate, the Capitals Canine Calendar, Wish Upon a Par, and Hockey Fights Cancer initiatives.
The only blemish on Hathaway’s season was when he spat on an opposing player, Erik Gudbranson, and was suspended three games by the NHL. Hathaway took responsibility for the incident afterward saying it has “no place in the game” but did not apologize to Gudbranson.
Here are the other 30 players who were nominated.

In April, Hathaway surprised 12-year-old Potomac, Md., native and youth hockey player Alex Henderson with a surprise invite to a future Capitals game. Upon seeing a local news article about the Hendersons that mentioned their Capitals-themed masks were popular with recipients, Hathaway surprised the Hendersons on a video call with a thank you and invite to Capitals game once deemed safe by health authorities.
This season Hathaway also participated in the team’s Mental Health Awareness Talk Saves Lives panel, participating in a Q&A discussion on mental health, and in the team’s Courage Caps skate with Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors families.
