Garnet Hathaway spits on Erik Gudbranson, receives match penalty

The second period of the Caps-Ducks game erupted into chaos. After a tense period in which the Ducks struggled to seize back control of the game, tensions finally boiled over. It was an unlikely series of events, started by Brendan Leipsic’s monster hit on Erik Gudbranson, and then ending with an even rarer event — a Chandler Stephenson goal.

Once the dust settled, the Caps took a 3-0 lead into the second intermission — and Garnet Hathaway got a match penalty.

This big clean hit from Leipsic set off the events, as he cruised below the goal line to collide with Erik Gudbranson.
In the wake of that hit, Chandler Stephenson scored his third goal of the season.

But then everything went pear-shaped. It was a nearly a line brawl as Leipsic and Garnet Hathaway each squared up against Ducks players. Gudbranson threw a late punch at Hathaway as the players were separated. Hathaway responded by spitting at Gudbranson.

Here’s another angle from the Ducks’ telecast.

The Capitals tweeted this after the melee.

After a lengthy review, Hathaway was assessed a match penalty for spitting. Leipsic received a double minor for roughing.

Hathaway will automatically be suspended until Commissioner Gary Bettman makes a ruling.
