Dr. Fauci throwing out the ceremonial first pitch isn’t the only special thing that’s happening on MLB’s Opening Day, Thursday.
To celebrate their 2019 World Series title, the Washington Nationals will wear gold-trimmed jerseys and hats against the New York Yankees. The Nationals have been teasing the new look, which was initially revealed in an Instagram video by Adam Eaton, over the last several days.

The Nationals will wear white jerseys and red hats on Opening Day. On the front of their white jerseys, the Nationals wordmark will be outlined with gold trim while the team’s World Series patch will be entirely navy blue and gold. On the other sleeve, the traditional Nationals seal logo is embellished with gold and features a gold star above it to signify the team’s World Series win. The back will feature player names in gold trim while the players’ numbers will be entirely in gold. The team’s hats will feature the curly W in gold and a gold Commissioner’s Trophy patch on the side. The hat’s button at the very top will also be gold.
According to a team release, the Nationals “will be worn on-field throughout the 2020 season.”
The gold collection will launch online tomorrow (RMNB will post links when they first hit the web) and physically at the Team Store at Nationals Park. Authentic and replica jerseys for men, as well as replica women’s and youth versions, will be available. Jerseys of your favorite players will be available, as well as blank jerseys with an option to customize for an additional charge. Prices start at $130 for adult replica jerseys and $75 for youth. Other gold collection merch includes drinkware, patches, and souvenir items such as decals, keychains, and pennants.
According to ESPN’s Paul Lukas, gold jersey tradition first started in the MLB by the Boston Red Sox in 2005, who wore the jerseys for a pregame ceremony.

The St. Louis Cardinals became the first team to actually wear them in games two years later.

Since then, most championship teams have followed suit.
