Ilya Kovalchuk hasn’t reported to Washington yet, but it appears he may be better off anyway.
The Russian forward is working out in California with Christopher Camacho, the personal trainer of former Olympian and two-division world champion in the UFC, Daniel Cormier. He’s also trained retired tennis great Pete Sampras.
Friday, Kovalchuk posted a video of himself running on the beach with a harness on Instagram.

I’m absolutely exhausted just watching this.
A few days earlier, Kovalchuk worked out in Big Bear and was part of a group that included Camacho and professional boxer Gennady Golovkin.

Here are a few photos of Camacho with Cormier, who is currently training for the final fight of his UFC career, a trilogy bout against Stipe Miocic.

Kovalchuk has openly talked about how excited he is to be on the Capitals. And it’s not just because he’s finally on the same team as Alex Ovechkin. Kovalchuk believes this could be, perhaps, his last best chance to win the Stanley Cup, as reports suggest he will sign with the Montreal Canadiens in the offseason. Kovalchuk has only made the Stanley Cup Final once in his career, when the New Jersey Devils lost to the Los Angeles Kings in six games in 2012.
“[I]tβs a great chance to win something special,” Kovalchuk said in April during a podcast interview. “I think that group of guys, they are ready. Theyβre experienced, theyβre healthy, theyβre big and strong. You see why St. Louis won the Cup last year when nobody expected. Like all those skill teams do really well (in the regular season), but I think the playoffs is really about size and toughness and everything together. We were ready. The last few games (the Capitals) played really well. It was taking a little time to adjust to the system and everything but great group of guys and was very excited to be there. Hopefully, we are going to finish the season and playoffs will start.β
