NHL and NHLPA agree on July 10 as formal date for start of training camps

The NHL and the NHLPA have agreed on Friday, July 10, to be the start of formal training camps league-wide.

Phase 3 involves all players for each of the 24 playoff teams returning to their home city to train for the resumption of the 2019-20 season.

The full report reads:

The National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA) and the National Hockey League (NHL) announced today that formal training camps (Phase 3) for the 24 teams resuming play will open on Friday, July 10, provided that medical and safety conditions allow and the parties have reached an overall agreement on resuming play. The length of training camp and, therefore, the start date for formal resumption of play (Phase 4) will be determined at a future date.

Sportsnet’s Chris Johnston was the first to report the news.

This starting date suggests a possible resumption of the 2019-20 NHL season will not happen until early August with a three-week training camp being the most discussed option.

A previous report by Elliotte Friedman in May suggested Phase 3 wouldn’t start before July 10.

The NHL entered Phase 2 of its return to play plan on Monday with teams like the Edmonton Oilers and Pittsburgh Penguins already returning to the ice.

The Washington Capitals will return for small group activities at MedStar Capitals Iceplex today.
