The NHL posted an ad to thank health care workers on National Nurses Day, Wednesday. Nurses are on the front lines of the world’s war against the coronavirus, which has hit the NHL’s home base of New York City especially hard.
The NHL’s video is simple, yet very powerful.
The ad starts with two of the biggest superstars in the league, Connor McDavid and David Pastrnak, saying “thank you.” They begin to clap.
More and more players join in, such as PK Subban, Jordan Binnington, and Matt Duchene. As the video continues, the screens multiply and show fans clapping until the sound crescendos at the very end.
“In honor of National Nurses Week, we applaud nurses everywhere,” the NHL writes.
While no Capitals players are featured in the video, several fans wearing Caps gear are.
The commercial continues the NHL’s work of trying to do what it can to give back during the coronavirus pandemic while the season is suspended. In late April, the league also came out with team-branded cloth face masks. The proceeds from the sale of each mask will go to support the Feeding America and Food Banks Canada COVID-19 Response Fund.
The Hockey Hall of Fame recently released a video featuring players and fans doing stick taps in appreciation.

Earlier in the week, Tom Wilson, TJ Oshie, and John Carlson spoke with nurses at local MedStar Hospitals in a Zoom call to thank them for their work.
Oshie has also sent private messages to nurses and other front-line workers who are in harms way.
