The Washington Capitals commissioned local artist Shawn Perkins (website) to create a mural celebrating Alex Ovechkin scoring 700 goals. The painting is located at Bar Deco, which is a block away from Capital One Arena (717 6th St NW).
“We ❤️ our @capitals and we’re not afraid to show it,” Bar Deco wrote on Instagram. “Do as they said and stop by and snap a picture with our art by @sptheplug honoring @aleksandrovechkinofficial’s historic 700 goals.”
The mural, which is approximately 15 feet tall, features the Capitals’ weagle logo as well as Ovechkin celebrating with his teammates in the foreground. Perkins created a collage effect in the background using such elements as newspaper clippings, text messages, and other assorted photos.

“The Caps reached out to me to create a concept to put together some imagery for Ovechkin,” Perkins said in an interview. “My background is In graphic design, although I quit my job to pursue painting full time. I currently do murals throughout DC and commissioned by others for original work on canvas all over the country.”
Perkins’ clientele includes ESPN, Universal Studios, Cadillac, MGM National Harbor, the Washington Auto Show, and Jack Daniels and he has done murals in schools, hotels, and restaurants.
History becomes art.
