Alex Ovechkin scored the 693rd goal of his career Wednesday against the Nashville Predators. The goal catapulted Ovechkin into sole possession of ninth place on the all-time goals list, passing Steve Yzerman.
Yzerman congratulated Ovechkin in a pre-taped video that was released by the Capitals.

“Hey, Alex. Steve Yzerman from Detroit here,” he began. “I just wanted to congratulate you on moving into sole possession of ninth place on the league’s all-time scoring list. You’ve had a tremendous career to date and it looks like you’re going strong and you might play forever. Best of luck, and continued success. I really enjoyed watching you play and watching you fill in the net. All the best.”
Yzerman then added, “Oh, and one more thing. If you ever do break Wayne Gretzky’s all-time record for most goals in the league, after watching your Stanley Cup celebrations, I wanna be invited to your party.”

Ovechkin said earlier this season in an interview with Linda Cohn that he would instantly retire if he broke Wayne Gretzky’s goal record.
“You probably never gonna see me on the ice again,” Ovechkin said laughing. “Yeah, right away. See ya!” He then did a salute.
Presumably, an epic celebration would happen after that. And if it’s anything like the Cup parties, Ovi, please make sure to invite me too.
