Alex Ovechkin passes Steve Yzerman for ninth on the NHL’s all-time goals list

Alex Ovechkin scored one of the easiest goals of his career against the Nashville Predators, Wednesday.

And it was another historic tally.

After a dump-in, Predators goaltender Juuse Saros misplayed the puck and fumbled it right to Ovechkin who was skating hard to the net. Whoops. Ovi slammed the loose puck home, narrowing the Predators’ first-period lead to 3-2.

Ovechkin was clearly inspired to start the game, tossing four shots and seven shot attempts at the net in the period.

The goal marked Ovi’s 35th of the season and the 693rd of his career. Ovechkin is now ninth on the all-time goals list, passing longtime Detroit Red Wings captain Steve Yzerman. With one more goal, he’d tied Mark Messier for eighth (694).

Ovechkin also now has twelve 35-goal seasons, the fourth most in NHL history.

This continues a hot stretch for Ovechkin. The Capitals captain incredibly has nine goals in his last four games after scoring a hat trick in consecutive games before the bye week. Tonight, he is trying to become the first player ever to have hatties in three straight games.
