Ryan Zimmerman is returning for another year.
The Washington Nationals’ first baseman agreed to a one-year, $2 million deal. The contract has performance bonuses that could make it worth up to $5 million.
The news was first reported by the Washington Post’s Barry Svrluga.
The Nationals have an agreement on a one-year deal with Ryan Zimmerman, their all-time leader in games, hits, homers, RBI, etc., according to a person familiar with the deal. It is pending a physical.

The Zimmerman deal is a $2-million base salary. Performance bonuses — games and plate appearances — can bring it as high as $5M. If he performs, he plays. If he plays, he earns more.

MASN has more about the contract.
The deal, which is pending a physical and includes a full no-trade clause, gives Zimmerman the ability to increase his pay based on games played and plate appearances, according to the sources. Combined with the $2 million the Nationals paid to buy out the $18 million option that had been attached to his previous contract, Zimmerman could wind up earning as much as $7 million this year.
Zimmerman is taking a major pay cut to return. He made $18 million last season and $14 million in the previous six seasons. After dealing with a foot injury, Zimmerman only had 6 home runs and 27 RBI’s in a career-low 52 games last season but was huge during the Nationals’ World Series run hitting 2 home runs and knocking in 7 in 16 games.
The 2020 campaign will be Zimmerman’s 16th season in the MLB. The 35-year-old will likely split time at first base with Eric Thames and Howie Kendrick.
Zimmerman admitted that he’d either retire to play golf or return for another season over the offseason.
The affable power hitter recently paid up a bet with Nicklas Backstrom and suited up as a goaltender at Washington Capitals practice.
