Alex Ovechkin scores twice in first period, now has the 11th most goals in NHL history

Alex Ovechkin has passed Teemu Selanne in all-time goals with two first-period goals against the Carolina Hurricanes on Monday.

Here comes Ovi goals number 685 and 686.

Goal 1

Tied 0-0 in the first period, the Caps top line got some time in the offensive zone. Ovechkin sent the puck low, where Wilson chased it on the forecheck. Ovechkin read the play and headed to the slot, where Wilson sent an expert pass. A simple wrist shot was more that Carolina goalie Petr Mrazek could handle.

Caps lead. Glove kiss. Eleventh most goals in history.

Goal 2

The Canes’ penalty woes kept them a man down for much of the first period. After two floundering power plays for Washington, they finally hit the back of the net on the third. How? Ovi Shot. Ovi Spot.

This is Ovechkin’s seventh two-goal game of the season and the 139th multi-goal game of his career.

Next up is in the all-time list is Mario Lemieux, just four goals up the road. If Ovi keeps this up, that won’t be too far.
