Monday, after the Capitals fell to the Bruins 7-3, the team flew back from Boston to Dulles Airport. Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin then took a flight to Miami to join his family, wife Nastya Ovechkina and son Sergei Ovechkin, who were already staying in their oceanside condo in Sunny Isles Beach for the Christmas holiday.
Tuesday, to celebrate Christmas Eve, Ovi and Nastya traveled north to Palm Beach to attend a holiday party thrown by President Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago.
Ovechkin greeted Trump, shook hands, and presented the 45th President of the United States with a white Capitals jersey.
“Nice to meet you, mr President,” wrote Nastya Ovechkina on Instagram.
The Ovechkins were joined at the table by Oleg Kouznetsov, the creative director of Excell Auto Group, and his longtime girlfriend Charlotte, a model and general manager of Peace, Love, Med Spa. Kouznetsov has the hashtag “#MAGA” in his Instagram bio.
Ovechkin appears to have gotten an “in” to the party from Kouznetsov, who has met Trump and attended several Mar-a-Lago parties before.
The night marked Ovechkin’s second known meeting with President Trump. The Russian winger first met Trump at a White House ceremony celebrating the Capitals’ Stanley Cup championship in March 2019.
“You were led to victory by a very special athlete, a great player, captain, team captain, Alex Ovechkin,” Trump said in his speech then. “Alexander the Great, they call him, has spent his entire 13 year NHL career with the Washington Capitals and his hard work and his loyalty has paid off last season. He outscored every player in the league. Wow, thatβs not bad right? With 64 goalsβItβs like Babe Ruthβhe had more than any player in the league. 64 goals, 118 points, and was named the playoff MVP and that was easy. No one did more to deserve the Conn Smythe trophy and Alex congratulations.”
In another link between the two, Trump gave Vladimir Putin an Ovechkin jersey during the two leaders’ famed Helsinki meeting.
Ovechkin also randomly ran into Ivanka Trump and her husband Jared Kushner at Cafe Milano during the Capitals’ sloppy Stanley Cup celebration in downtown DC on June 9.
Trump first attended a Christmas Eve service at a West Palm Beach church before traveling to Mar-a-Lago for the dinner party. Trump made headlines at the party by chatting with famed attorney Alan Dershowitz, who is rumored to be a possible addition to the president’s impeachment team.
