The Washington Capitals released their annual holiday video on Monday morning and it has so many levels I feel like I’m playing Super Mario Brothers 3.
Tom Wilson’s mustache and Captain’s chonkiness suggest the movie was filmed in mid to late November. Judging by the navy-painted bricks, the setting is the alternate locker room at MedStar Capitals Iceplex. Then there’s the ugly Christmas sweaters, which, you guys, are a delight.
Each player (except for Garnet Hathaway and Nic Dowd who rocked matching holiday onesies) wore a different one. Jakub Vrana reached Peak V when he rocked a Santa Keg Stand ugly sweater.
Using the clutch help of Google and the eagle eyes of RMNB illustrator/designer/writer Rachel Cohen, here is every ugly sweater the Capitals wore in the holiday video.

Created by Tipsy Elves, Jakub Vrana’s sweater shows that the Capitals forward is ready to party this holiday season. The navy blue sweater with red trim at the arms and waist shows Santa doing a keg stand with the help of three elves, who stand on top of each other to hold Santa’s large candy-filled body up. This is the same type of teamwork that the Capitals had when they did their Cup Stands during the summer of 2018.
The sweater is out of stock online, but I did find one available in large on eBay.

Alex Ovechkin wore an ugly sweater that (I think) is a tribute to cats. Despite being more of a dog guy (shoutout to Blake), Ovechkin’s green sweater shows an amped-up cat trying to claw down ornaments and create havoc in a Christmas tree just like Ovi does during games with his big goals and even bigger hits.

John Carlson, the NHL’s leading scorer for defenseman, showed off his love for gingerbread men and sarcasm with his “Bite Me” ugly sweater. The ugly sweater is available on Poshmark.

Capitals third-line forward and ace penalty killer, Carl Hagelin, wore a green Christmas sweater in a holiday tribute to all those hardworking cows out there. The large cow in the front wears a holiday hat and is eating a few strands of grass. Created by Blizzard Bay, the sweater is available for purchase on Amazon.

Tom Wilson, who is a mountain of a man, wore an ugly sweater featuring Santa flexing. The sweater is made by Tipsy Elves and is available on large sizes on Amazon.

Lars Eller once brought us all to our feet after scoring the Capitals’ championship-winning goal in the Stanley Cup Final. He’s also doing the same with this ugly sweater that is an obvious homage to tacos. The ugly sweater was created by Blizzard Bay and available on Amazon.

Braden Holtby, like Jakub Vrana, wore an ugly sweater dedicated to partying. Showing two reindeer drinking beer, Holtby’s sweater contains metal trash can (or beer keg, I’m not sure), that can also hold a bottle of beer on your chest. The ugly sweater is available in small and medium sizes at Kohl’s. Thank you, Charlie and Shiloh for helping me figure this one out!
