Garnet Hathaway’s dad on the advice he gave his son growing up: ‘If you can dream it you can do it and never never never give up’

Garnet Hathaway was behind one of the grossest plays of the hockey season, but time heals all wounds. Also wound-healing: Garnet’s papa John Hathaway.

The elder Hathaway, whose blonde locks and beard make him look like a cross between Jerry Garcia and Santa Claus, is especially in touch with his emotions. And during the first intermission, Papa Hathaway waxed poetic about just how special being on this Mentors’ Trip with his son was.

John, what does it mean to be here on this trip with your son?

John Hathaway: “Look I think it’s incredible that all these players on the ice tonight on this Caps team come from all over the world. And they all learn the same lesson very early on and that’s that a hockey team is like a family. Whether you’re on the ice or off the ice, you stick up for your family and that’s what these guys do.

“I think as parents we try to teach them two lessons as kids growing up: if you can dream it you can do it and never never never give up. I think the dads are here tonight, and not only so proud of their sons, but they’re happy for their sons because they know they had big dreams – they dared to dream big – and they never gave up. They just know hard work is good luck and they just kept working and working and working.

“We’re so happy that the Caps organization would celebrate that family aspect and invite us here.”

Garnet, what’s it like to have Dad here?

Garnet Hathaway: “It’s amazing. Like my dad said, it’s special that we have all the guys’ dads here. The whole organization has their dad or their mentor. Throughout the season, you don’t usually have that much time to usually spend with them – the quality time. So we’ve had a great time going out to eat. Guys are bunking up with their dads too so it’s made for a lot of fun but a lot of time that you’re making up for because we don’t really see them during the season.”

At the conclusion of the interview, Papa Hathaway put his arm around his son’s shoulder. The two embraced and smiled for the camera.

It was the second time during this Capitals Mentors’ Trip that John Hathaway has said something notable.

Now, Caps, invite the moms. I bet they have some great things to say too!
