Ron MacLean announces the end of Coach’s Corner and discusses Don Cherry’s firing

Don Cherry was fired this week following his troubling anti-immigrant comments. This Saturday night, Cherry’s former co-host Ron MacLean addressed the event.

MacLean’s comments, apparently unscripted, are personal, not political. He discusses his friendship with Cherry and his disappointment in his own initial reaction to Cherry’s remarks. He closes the segment with a loving tribute to Cherry — and a sideways announcement that Coach’s Corner is now over.

MacLean had previously issued an apology but had not spoken about the events at length until Saturday .

His segment on HNIC this week, however, was more of a personal reflection on the events. “It’s about relationships,” MacLean says. See for yourself.

Speaking directly to Cherry at the end, MacLean says, “We honor what you’ve meant to the game, to the fact that you have been there for human beings and sentient beings. I love you very much. We honor you tonight in this last Coach’s Corner.”
