All the way back: Oilers beat Caps 4-3

The Washington Capitals came barreling into Edmonton on a four game winning streak, coming up against a team that hasn’t scored a goal in over 150 minutes of play. Could the Caps hot streak stay hot or is the cold streak for the Oilers over?

Darnell Nurse got the Oil on the board first with a flukey deflected pass. Jakub Vrana tied it up with a spin-o-rama wrister. Alex Ovechkin tipped home a point drive to give the Caps a lead and put one home on the power play to extend said lead. Leon Draisatl brought the Oilers back within one and Connor McDavid tied it.

Draisatl overtime winner.

Oilers beat Caps 4-3.

  • The Caps first period was pretty atrocious. They seemed content with letting the Oilers camp out in the wrong zone at even strength for the last 15 minutes of the period. I really hope they aren’t shying away from the aggressive style they were playing earlier in the season and going back to the counter intuitive five-on-five stuff they did a lot of last season. The last few games seem like they’ve worryingly chosen the latter.
  • My oh my, why was the ice in Edmonton so horrible tonight? Felt like the puck had a mind of its own the entire game. Little bit of a joke to be very honest.
  • The Oilers first period goal was their first goal in over 165 minutes of play and it came off a fluke deflection in front on an attempted pass. Darnell Nurse, nephew of Donovan McNabb, got credit.

  • Much better period from the Caps in the second. Still think the Oilers had a few too many grade A chances for my liking, but you really cant complain about leaving a three spot on the board in one period. Alex Ovechkin took over the game from the jump of the second frame.
  • Can we talk about that stick check on Connor McDavid from Radko Gudas? Was this guy seriously always this good?
  • While we’re talking individual moments of brilliance, Braden Holtby with that split save on Zack Kassian. Are you kidding me, Holts? 36 saves for him tonight.
  • Two more goals this season for Ovi. His 8th and 9th this year and 666th and 667th of his career. The latter goal was the 250th power play goal of his career, inching him closer to Dave Andreychuk for the all time lead.

  • The third period was a blur. Back and forth offense is something I assume the Caps brass hated, but man was it fun to watch. Way too much turtling towards the end.
  • Connor McDavid is the most ridiculous hockey player I have ever seen. Shame that Edmonton had to pick him.
  • Joe Beninati said Jakub Vrana‘s second intermission interview sounded like an “obscene phone call”. That’s some #RMNBAfterDark for you.

Onward to Vancouver for a date with Jay Beagle’s Canucks. The Caps will never play at home again.
