Evgeny Kuznetsov has points in every game he’s played this season after scoring a stunning breakaway goal. The goal tied the game 2-2 and was the first of a three-goal explosion in the second period where the Caps scored three times in a one-minute and 18-second span.
It was a flawless goal in a flawless period of hockey.
The goal came off a set play and a near turnover by Radko Gudas, which could have led to a layup Leafs goal. As the Caps defenseman attempted to dump the puck back into the offensive zone from the blue line, Gudas’s attempt was blocked by Auston Matthews.
Kuznetsov, seeing immediate danger, raced to the loose puck in neutral, beating Matthews for possession and preventing a breakaway attempt for the Leafs star. As Kuzy curled back into the play, he found Carl Hagelin at the offensive blue line. Hagelin tapped the puck to Carlson who advanced it into the zone. Meanwhile, Kuznetsov kept skating. Carlson hit Kuznetsov with speed, springing the Russian center with a semi-breakaway. Kuzy deked and then beat Michael Hutchinson on his backhand.

The goal gave the Capitals momentum and they took immediate advantage of a stunned Leafs team. Nicklas Backstrom scored 11 seconds later after another set play.
John Carlson, one minute and seven seconds after that, scored on the powerplay to give the Capitals a 4-2 commanding lead.
