This just in. The Washington Capitals have placed defenseman Christian Djoos on waivers, choosing to keep defense prospects Martin Fehérváry and Jonas Siegenthaler on the roster as well as Tyler Lewington.
Ahead of opening night on Wednesday, the Capitals must clear money to get under the salary cap and get the roster down to 23 active players.
The Capitals also placed Liam O’Brien and Michael Sgarbossa on waivers with the intention of sending them to Hershey. Shane Gersich, who was recalled to fill Lars Eller’s place on Sunday’s roster was loaned back to the Bears.

The Capitals’ roster currently stands at 25, which includes Evgeny Kuznetsov who will be suspended the first three games of the season and Michal Kempny who is “highly likely” to miss opening night. That means the Capitals must cut at least one more player, make a trade, or put Kempny on longterm injured reserve.
Djoos’ cap hit is $1.25 million. If he makes it through waivers and is optioned back to Hershey, the Caps will save $1.075 million total towards the salary cap – the max buried cap hit according to Cap Friendly. Per Isabelle Khurshudyan, the Capitals remain roughly $2.7 million over.
This is where the Caps' roster currently stands with 25 players. It's roughly $2.7 million over the cap, per @CapFriendly, but cutting a forward, a defenseman and a goalie will eventually solve it. I think. pic.twitter.com/JsPG3vJLYl

The only three players remaining on the Capitals roster that are waivers exempt are Martin Fehervary, Jonas Siegenthaler, and Ilya Samsonov.
