Sometimes the Sweedish stereotypes are apt.
Friday, Nicklas Backstrom, Braden Holtby, and Tom Wilson participated in a charity event for So Kids Can along with DC 101’s Elliot Segal. The trio of Washington Capitals players helped build a gymnasium at Hendley Elementary School, which will allow the kids to host sporting events at home now.
Backstrom dedicated himself to building the bleachers along with Holtby.

While he worked, the Swedish center revealed that he’s a pretty reliable with his hands because he’s built things for his kids “a couple of times” in the past.
“It’s just like putting together IKEA furniture,” Backstrom observed.
Backstrom also referenced the Swedish-founded company in a recent video for the NHLPA. A handful of hockey-playing Swedes explain if certain Swedish stereotypes applied to them. Backstrom spoke about his affinity for IKEA.
“I’ve done it many times,” Backstrom said. “I’ve had it to install it for Andre Burakovsky too.” The Capitals center smiled, before adding “since he doesn’t know how to do it.”

“I don’t think you can name any Swede without at least one IKEA furniture at home,” Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist observed. “That’s just how it works.”
At home, Nicklas Backstrom embraces his home country further with an expensive Swedish bed made out of horsehair. But don’t count Nicky as a big Swedish meatball guy.
“It’s a normal dish but we don’t eat it as much as people think,” Backstrom said.
Though if he’s at IKEA, I’m sure it’s the only thing he’ll eat.
