Sunday night, we had a battle between two division leaders for ya before you need to head to work in the morning. Did the Caps make the beginning of this work week more tolerable or did the Jets turn your Sunday scary?
Nicklas Backstrom got us started with a snipe from the slot to give the Caps a 1-0 lead. That lead was short lived as former Caps center, Mathieu Perreault struck soon after to give us a 1-1 tie. Carl Hagelin scored right out of the box to restore the lead in the second.
Lars Eller sealed it with an empty netter.
Caps beat Jets 3-1!
- I thought that the Caps had the puck in a lot of good areas in the first but just could not come up with too many high danger chances (or shots in general) in front of Connor Hellebuyck‘s cage. Pheonix Copley however had to deal with more than a few rush chances from the Jets and he did so splendidly.
- Mathieu Perreault looks like he has spent the entire Long Night atop the wall with the Night’s Watch. On a more serious note, the trade that sent Perreault out of DC is arguably a worst “known value” trade than the one that sent Filip Forsberg to Nashville.
- Andre Burakovsky has been skating like the wind of late. He has an all new jump to his game and I absolutely love seeing it. Keep it up, Dale.
- Scary moment for the Caps defense as Matt Niskanen took a Patrik Laine blast to the glove on a five-on-three penalty kill and had to go down the tunnel. Nisky returned for the second and we all could breathe again.

- Second period felt boring and the Caps had nine shots total through forty minutes. However, I don’t think they’ve necessarily been very bad, just in the box way too much…again. Their own first power play attempt of the game was horrendous, burn that tape.
- John Carlson recorded an assist on Backstrom’s goal, giving him 50 apples total on the season. He is only the third Capitals defensemen in franchise history to record back-to-back 50 assist seasons. The first two were Scott Stevens (1986-89) and Larry Murphy (1986-88).
- Can the Caps re-sign Carl Hagelin like…tonight? What an addition, I love this guy. Have to mention Nic Dowd‘s ridiculous backhand touchdown pass to spring Hags for his goal out of the box. Insert chef kissing fingers thing here.
- Adam Jones signed with the Diamondbacks and now I’m sad.

- Even third period and the Caps definitely were trying to muddy up neutral to get this one closed out.
- If you listen to the RMNB Podcast, you know that Ian has not seen many very popular movies or TV shows. He however has seen Mean Girls approximately three times. Shocking development.
- Pheonix Copley was pretty fantastic in a start that I think many questioned. Great night for the rookie netminder.
- I think the Caps top six needs reconfiguration, but probably more on that tomorrow morning in my numbers post. Seven wins in a row anyway.

The Caps next game is on Tuesday night in Pittsburgh (vomit). Lets hope the Caps smoke those mustard colored avians.
