Marcus Johansson has a lung contusion

Marcus Johansson has had a run of terrrible luck since he left the Capitals in 2017. His most recent episode came on the heels of his trade to the Boston Bruins, when Johansson took a hard hit from Michael Ferland during a game against the Carolina Hurricanes. Johansson left the game and was taken to the hospital, where he was kept overnight.

Johansson has now been discharged, and the team has closed that he has suffered a lung contusion.

Here again is the injury-causing hit:

Our very own lovely RMNB Crasher and doctor Lindsey gives us the lowdown on lung contusions:

A lung contusion is a bruise in the lung. Generally, it follows blunt trauma and is described in sports injuries, car accidents, and falls, etc.

It’s not always associated with broken ribs. The chest wall is a little bit flexible so a contusion can occur when a significant force causes the chest wall to bend in a little, bruising the underlying lung but not cutting it.

Blood accumulates in the alveoli, or air spaces, in the lung, which means those alveoli cannot function – they can’t do their job of gas exchange. The symptoms may not come on immediately but include high heart rate and difficulty breathing, with a cough and, often, coughing up some blood.

The main thing is to monitor the patient and make sure they maintain adequate oxygen levels. It can be a very dangerous injury, requiring close monitoring and support, but recovery can be relatively quick.

From the Bruins:

BOSTON – The Boston Bruins have issued the following update on forward Marcus Johansson:

Marcus Johansson was brought to the Massachusetts General Hospital during the game against Carolina on March 5 for evaluation. Testing revealed a lung contusion. He was monitored overnight and was discharged today after further evaluation by specialists.

He will be re-evaluated in approximately one week.
