When hockey superstitions get weird: Alex Ovechkin’s latest pregame biting victim is Jakub Vrana

Back in October, Andre Burakovsky revealed one of his, uh, unconventional hockey superstitions. Before every Capitals game, Burakovsky and Alex Ovechkin take turns biting each other on the arm.

But in a video taken last month before a Capitals’ away game against the Vegas Golden Knights, Ovechkin sunk his teeth into a new victim: Jakub Vrana.

In the video, Ovechkin approaches Vrana ahead of the players’ typical pregame soccer warm-up. Vrana, who appears to know the drill, turns to present his right arm to be sacrificed to the hockey gods.

Ovechkin removes his beanie and wraps it around Vrana’s arm to cushion his bite. But Ovi’s chompers must be sharp because the bite still manages to elicit a shout from Vrana, who clutches his arm and stares at Ovi like a puppy who has just had its tail stepped on.

Vrana returns the bite, but Ovechkin walks away seemingly unphased (probably because he’s made of titanium — RMNB, y’all).

In case you missed it, here are the photos and video of the last time this ritualistic biting was captured on film:

Who will Ovechkin chew on next? Is anyone on this team safe?

RMNB is not associated with the Washington Capitals; Monumental Sports, the NHLPA, the NHL, or its properties. Not even a little bit.
