Ilya Samsonov records first career AHL shutout against Lehigh Valley Phantoms

Saturday night against the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, Capitals goaltending prospect Ilya Samsonov recorded his first career AHL shutout.

In front of a sellout crowd at PPL Center, Samsonov stopped all 18 shots he faced. The Bears’ victory ended a nine-game winning streak for the Phantoms against the Bears at the arena, dating back to April 5, 2017.

The Bears and Phantoms remained goalless until the second period, where defenseman Ryan Sproul broke the deadlock with a wrister that beat goaltender Alex Lyon. Riley Barber added two more games, giving him his 14th and 15th goals of the season.

Samsonov’s shutout also earned him the first star of the night. Goal scorers Barber and Sproul earned the second and third stars respectively.
