Cut down by Khudobin: numbers for the morning after

The Washington Capitals needed a good performance in response to their very poor one in St. Louis and they got it against the Stars. Unfortunately, the bounces didn’t go their way and some sparkling goaltending doomed them to a 2-1 overtime defeat.

The Caps out-shot the Stars 36 to 29 and out-attempted them at five-on-five 43 to 38.

  • After a pretty bad first period, the Caps took total control of this one. In the latter two periods they out-attempted the Stars 50 to 24, out-scoring chanced them 28 to 6, and out high-danger chanced them 12 to 2. Just the way she goes sometimes.
  • Andre Burakovsky‘s assist on the Capitals lone goal was his ninth point in nine games against the Dallas Stars. His five career goals against the Stars are the most he has against any one team and his point per game pace against them is also his best pace against any team.
  • Nic Dowd and Dmitrij Jaskin should be playing every night. As should Jonas Siegenthaler.
  • Folks, I’m worried about Evgeny Kuznetsov. This current top line isn’t doing it for me and at this point I think he’s the issue here. Dude’s not having a great season really anywhere other than the power play. They joined the fourth line as the only forwards in the negative five-on-five differential wise when it comes to shot attempts, scoring chances, and high danger chances.
  • Speaking of the power play, that unit is now 1 for their last 27 opportunities. However, they seem to be on the brink of breaking through. Lets hope that, that happens in Detroit’s pizza palace on Sunday.
  • Although he takes the loss on the day, Pheonix Copley was quite stellar once again in a 27 save effort. Dude’s on a roll.
