Complete collapse: numbers for the morning after

The Washington Capitals could not extend their winning streak to eight games as they fell in quite shocking fashion to the formerly mighty Anaheim Ducks. The Caps blew a four goal lead on the way to a 6-5 loss in regulation.

The Caps out-shot the Ducks 32 to 25 and out-attempted them at five-on-five 42 to 40.

  • Before things got turned upside down, Braden Holtby recorded his 10,000th career save with the Capitals. Holts is only the second goaltender in franchise history to reach that feat, the first being Ollie Kolzig (18,013 saves).
  • Nicklas Backstrom‘s early first period goal surpassed Mike Ridley (218) for fourth all time in goal scoring in Capitals franchise history. On that same goal, John Carlson passed Mike Green (360) for fifth in defenseman scoring in franchise history with his assist.
  • Tom Wilson kept his goal scoring streak intact as he has now scored in six straight games. Willy now has 14 points in 10 games and is already fourth on the Capitals in goal scoring this season.
  • I thought Dmitry Orlov was positively horrendous in this game. Him and Matt Niskanen were on the ice at five-on-five for three Anaheim goals. I’m still a little worried about this once dominant pairing.
  • The winning streak is over and it ended in pretty shocking fashion, but I think we should remember that the Caps had just won seven games in a row and playd pretty darn well in those seven games. This loss was bad, but there are plenty of positives to pick out from this run.
