The enduring highlight from the Capitals’ 5-4 overtime win over the Montreal Canadiens will be Carey Price’s last-second stick save on Alex Ovechkin. The stop was so good, the Great 8 clapped and high-fived the former Hart Trophy winner in a show of good sportsmanship.
But that imagery blurs what otherwise was a dominant performance by Ovechkin. The Russian machine scored twice on Price and led the Capitals in shots on goals (5). At five-on-five, Ovechkin was on the ice for 22 shot attempts for and 13 against, a 62.9 shot-attempt percentage.
Ovechkin now has 20 goals in 25 career games against Carey Price – one of the best goaltenders of his generation.
Ovechkin’s first goal came 14:40 into the first period. Keeping his stick on the ice as he drove to the net, Capitals first-line forward Tom Wilson found Ovechkin with a slick pass after faking a shot. The goal gave the Capitals an early 2-1 lead.
Ovechkin scored again 1:02 into the third period. The goal tied the game 4-4. The Russian machine, set up in his office, one-timed a shot past Carey Price on the two-man advantage.
The two goals jumped Ovechkin into second place in the NHL in goals. Ovechkin now sits only two goals behind Boston Bruins forward David Pastrnak (17) for the league lead.
The goal also tied Ovechkin with one of his favorite players growing up, Mario Lemieux, with 236 power-play goals.
