On an NHL-less Friday, former KHL star Sergei Shumakov scored his first two AHL goals of his career against the Grand Rapids Griffins in Michigan.
The Capitals signed Shumakov during the offseason after CSKA Moscow let him go. Shumi finished 18th in KHL points last season, tallying 40 points (17 goals and 23 assists) in 47 games.
The 26-year-old forward’s milestone first goal occurred 17:19 into the first period.
Shumakov jammed home a loose puck after Liam O’Brien threw the puck on net. The tally tied the game up at one.

Shumakov’s second goal came 1:28 into the second period off of a hard forecheck.
Aaron Ness dumped the puck in deep, and Shumakov hustled into the zone. The Russian forward poked the puck off the stick of the Griffins’ defenseman through the goaltender’s legs and into the back of the net.
The play looked flukey at first, but Shumakov combined defensive awareness and great hand-eye coordination to score the goal.
