In late June, news surfaced that Capitals forward Chandler Stephenson would spend his day with the Stanley Cup in Humboldt, Saskatchewan. Stephenson, who grew up 70 miles west of the devastated town, was deeply affected by the tragedy.
“Usually before you win the Cup you don’t say the words Stanley Cup, but he actually at the start of the playoffs told a lot of people about how he wanted to take the Cup to Humboldt if he won,” NHL Director of Social Engagement Andrew Ference said. “He’s a Saskatoon native, so I was cheering for him obviously for that reason alone. And lo and behold he won it.”
Friday, the Broncos announced that the NHL and NHLPA will be supporting Stephenson’s event which is being called Humboldt Hockey Day. Stephenson will meet with Humboldt community members, take photos, sign autographs, and play shinny hockey with kids. Capitals prospect Connor Hobbs will join Stephenson in Humboldt along with a good deal of current and former NHL players.
The community is invited to come see the #StanleyCup and meet Chandler Stephenson. The Stanley Cup will be on display from 12 until 1:30 p.m., and the interactives/street hockey games will run from 12 until 2:30 p.m. #HumboldtStrong

The Broncos also announced that on top of the Stanley Cup making an appearance for photos, there will also be a Hockey Hall of Fame display, interactive games, and a Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame exhibit trailer for people to tour.
While the Humboldt tragedy will always be heartbreaking, the way the hockey community has rallied around the team has been uplifting.
More from the Humboldt Broncos:
The National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA) and the National Hockey League (NHL) are coming to Humboldt to host Humboldt Hockey Day on Friday, August 24 to celebrate the strength and resilience of the Humboldt Broncos community – a community that has worked so hard to support each other following the April 6 tragedy.
During the 2017-18 Stanley Cup playoffs, Washington Capitals forward and Saskatoon native, Chandler Stephenson announced his intention to bring the Stanley Cup to Humboldt if the Capitals won. In addition to the Stanley Cup, there will be a Hockey Hall of Fame display, interactive games, and a Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame exhibit trailer for people to tour. There also will be two pick-up street hockey rinks located in the curling rink where local kids will have the opportunity to play shinny with both current and former NHL players. Kids are asked to bring their hockey sticks with them.
The Broncos will have Humboldt Strong merchandise for sale, with proceeds going to the Humboldt Strong Community Foundation.
The main concession will be open throughout the event and local restaurants will also be serving food and drink outside the Elgar Petersen Uniplex.
