Barry Trotz rides horse, fires rifle during his day with the Stanley Cup

Former Capitals head coach Barry Trotz‘s day with the Cup began on Tuesday night, when the city of Dauphin renamed a street in his honor. The city council proclaimed Wednesday “Barry Trotz Day in Dauphin,” and it seems that the entire city joined in the celebration.

Trotz brought the Cup to a few senior centers and the Dauphin Regional Health Centre, where he and one of the Keepers of the Cup shared that the Cup can hold up to 14 beers.

The Trotz family and the Stanley Cup rode in a float pulled by a pick-up truck, and they were escorted by Mounties, a fire truck, a Ukrainian band, Dauphinites in Ukrainian costumes, and Canada’s National Riding and Dancing Cossacks.

At one point, Trotz shot a rifle from the float on Main Street. After his float ride, Trotz arrived to a photo shoot where an estimated crowd of four to five thousand wanted photos with the Cup and a chance to meet the coach.

The photoshoot cost $2 per person, and there was a raffle and a hot dog sale, with all of the proceeds going back to the community. Trotz generously matched the amount raised up to $75,000.

The lines at the Credit Union Place were long, with some fans waiting hours for their opportunity.

Trotz and the Cup also posed with crowds, including players from a youth hockey team.

Oh yeah, Trotz and the Cup also rode on a frickin’ horse.

Trotz plans to end his day with a private family celebration. “Instead of just taking a picture and looking at it, you get to touch it and you get to drink from it…And then you get to a smaller group, which I want to get to at the end of the night, [Wednesday] night and just family. When you get to that point, I think what you feel is it’s like a fire pit: You stare at it and you realize it’s something special.”
