Now that former Washington Capitals head coach Barry Trotz has signed on with Lou Lamoriello‘s New York Islanders to be their new bench boss, he needs to fill out the rest of his staff.
In a conference call with reporters shortly after his hiring was announced, Trotz named two Capitals coaches they could potentially join him on the Island: Lane Lambert and Mitch Korn.

In 2014, Lambert followed Trotz to DC from Nashville, where he also served an assistant coach. His contract expired after this season. It’s the same story with goaltending guru Korn, who had to be coaxed out of retirement just to join the Capitals in 2014. Korn transitioned away from day-to-day work to become the Capitals’ director of goaltending last year.
As for the rest of the Capitals’ bench, associate coach Todd Reirden is the front-runner to become the new Capitals head coach and assistant coach Blaine Forsythe will likely stay put.
