The first period of Monday’s game against the Blue Jackets went less than good. The Caps trailed 4-1 after twenty minutes with the road team surrendering a pair of goals at evens and another pair while a man down.
But as the period closed out, Alex Ovechkin got injured in a dust-up with Columbus winger Matt Calvert.
The period ended with a scuffle behind the Blue Jackets net. There Ovechkin gave Calvert some shoves. Calvert responded with a pop to Ovi’s face while holding the butt end of his stick.
Here’s a closer look.
Ovechkin dropped to the ice, a pool of blood to his side.
Meanwhile, Tom Wilson took offense and rumbled with defenseman Lukas Sedlak.
Moments later, Ovechkin skated off the ice under his own power, his mouth bloodied.
Calvert has been assessed a match penalty. Wilson will serve two minutes for roughing.
