Alex Ovechkin named captain of the 2018 NHL All-Star Metropolitan Division team

Through one month of fan voting, Alex Ovechkin continuously led all Metropolitan Division players in votes for NHL All-Star Game captain. Today, Ovechkin was formally named the captain of the team beating Sidney Crosby, John Tavares, Phil Kessel, and Sergei Bobrovsky.

This will be Ovechkin’s first time leading the Metropolitan Division team, after he missed the 2016 game due to a lower-body injury.

Ovechkin is joined by Connor McDavid (Pacific), Steven Stamkos (Atlantic), and PK Subban (Central). All four players held the lead in their respective division throughout the entire voting period.

The remaining all-stars will be announced by the NHL on January 10.

Ovechkin called the nod “a big honor for me, for this organization.” Ovechkin added that “it’s going to be a pretty cool time.”

Along with the captain announcement, the NHL has released the jerseys each division team will wear during the weekend.

The jerseys feature much richer colors than last year, including a highlighter yellow and neon orange, while the sleeves show a metallic silver stripe.

The All-Star Game will take place in Tampa, FL on January 28.
