Head coach Barry Trotz has given us many brilliant Trotzisms over the years from “feeding the right wolf” to “pulling the same rope.”
Today we celebrate his latest feat of word magic with a new RMNB t-shirt: “participation mode.” The print is in metallic silver-foil.
This shirt is perfect for the millennial in your family who thinks they deserve a trophy just for being out there.
We were inspired to illustrate after Trotz benched Jakub Vrana, one of the team’s best skaters and offensive players, ahead of Thursday’s game against the Colorado Avalanche.
“I’m going to pull him out tonight,” Trotz said. “He’s a good young player and I think he’s going to have a real good career. Just like all young players, there’s a difference between being involved and just participating. Right now, I feel, as a young player it’s a grind in this league, he’s in that participation mode rather than involvement mode.”
The Capitals lost 6-2 in one of the worst games of the season. Trotz had this to say Saturday:
Trotz said Vrana got a good look at what “participation mode” is when he was watching the team’s game against Avalanche.

Yes. Yes, he sure did.
You can buy the shirt in our Spreadshirt shop, which is currently offering free shipping.
RMNB is not associated with the Washington Capitals; Monumental Sports, the NHL, or its properties. Not even a little bit.
