The Arizona Coyotes have only won two games so far this season and they almost got away with another on Monday against the Washington Capitals.
The scoring began with a goal from the Coyotes just 60 seconds in. The Yotes continued to bank in a second goal, but it was quickly answered by Devante Smith-Pelly. We thank Smith-Pelly for giving us some room to breathe.
Alex Ovechkin tied the game up in the second period on a power play goal from his usual spot. This would be the only power play goal for the Capitals in six chances. Woof.
Period number three was pretty sleepy, so we got the opportunity to watch some extra hockey in overtime, where John Carlson scored the game winner with 45 seconds left. We are all too young to be this stressed out and I would’ve not bet my money on John Carlson with the final goal.
Caps win 3-2!
- Before the key points of the game begin, I’d like to take this moment to say Happy Birthday to our sweet Cara Bahniuk. May you have all the Tom Wilson smiles and balloons in the entire universe.
- The first goal of the game came from Clayton Keller for the Yotes. He is 19-years-old and it was 60 seconds after puck drop. What am I doing with my life?
- Nobody was too nervous about the first goal considering the Coyotes record when they score first.
Coyotes have scored first in 12 of their 16 games, but went 2-8-1 in the first 11 when they scored first.

- Then the Coyotes scored one more goal to bring the score up 2-0. Okay, one goal was fine…but two? C’mon now. Let’s not get carried away.
- Devante Smith-Pelly made the first period not completely embarrassing with this gorgeous backhand to make the score 2-1 going into the second period.

- It took a very long time for the Capitals to score on the power play, but after a textbook goal from Alex Ovechkin, they broke the streak. Game tied 2-2.
#Caps even it up 2-2 on the PP with an Ovi one-timer. First power play goal in seven contests and first 5-on-4 since New Jersey.

- Alex Ovechkin‘s goal became his career goal no. 570 and he passed Joe Nieuwendyk for 12th place all-time on NHL power play goal list. No big deal.
- Tom Wilson engaged in a small scuffle with Luke Schenn, which makes me question if the Schenn family has a dartboard with Tom Wilson’s face in the center. They probably do.
- The third period was very boring. The biggest takeaway? The power play is not looking good, despite that Ovechkin goal. They scored on one out of six.
- In regulation, shots on goal were 37-24 Caps, but the game felt way closer than that.
- John Carlson scored his first of the season in overtime to win it all.

At any rate, the Caps squeaked this one out despite playing not so great. Whatever, have a happy Monday and we’ll see you tomorrow. Buy a sweater.
