On Monday and Tuesday, former Montreal Canadiens defenseman P.K. Subban hosted a hockey clinic in Montreal for youth hockey players to raise money for financially vulnerable families of sick children. The clinic successfully raised $50,000, which will go towards the $10 million that Subban’s foundation P.K.’s Helping Hand has pledged to raise for the Montreal Children’s Hospital.
160 joyful, young hockey players came together for the clinic, the first ever hosted by Subban.
“We have kids from the ages of five to 17,” Martin Ross, the clinic’s head coach, said to Global News Montreal. “We seem to have a lot of excitement.”

All available spots in the clinic were reserved within just two days of tickets going on sale. Participation in the event cost $276 and included 90 minutes of ice time with Subban, an hour of off-ice conditioning, and the opportunity to hear a motivational speech from Subban’s father, Karl Subban.

The $50,000 raised from the event comprises part of the 20 percent of the fund’s seven-year-long goal of raising $10 million to assist families struggling financially due to a child’s illness.
On the P.K.’s Helping Hand website, Subban writes “Having a sick child often means one parent has to stop working, which puts a financial burden on the whole family. P.K.’s Helping Hand is dedicated to making sure that these parents don’t have to worry about paying for necessities like food and medicine and can instead focus on what’s most important: helping their child get well.”

Subban recruited three of his nephews to help out at the clinic.

In March of this year, Subban was honored with the Meritorious Service Decoration by Montreal Governor General David Johnston for his charity towards the city’s sick children and their families. Subban reaffirmed his commitment to the cause in August 2016 after being traded to the Nashville Predators, penning a heartfelt letter to the patients at Montreal Children’s Hospital.
In the letter, Subban wrote “Your positivity and attitude continue to inspire me every day. You might think that I’m doing so much for you, but the truth is you do much more for me.”
I wanted my friends @HopitalChildren to know that I will never stop fundraising for them. So I wrote a letter…https://t.co/giImuJz4ou
