DC legend Jim Vance has died

Longtime NBC Washington news anchor Jim Vance has died, the president and general manager of NBC4 announced Saturday. Vance had been undergoing treatment for cancer since May.

For nearly half a century, Vance was an indispensable part of the DC news landscape. With a voice both kind and strong, he spoke to us about a changing city and a changing world.

Vance was a proud Caps supporter. Here’s him with anthem singer Bob McDonald.

When landmark Ben’s Chili Bowl updated their mural this year, Vance was a lock.

He interviewed presidents and criminals. He worked with the Joy Boys, and he spoke truth to power. He covered the Million Man March and 9/11, Marion Barry and Chuck Brown. He could spell Siegenthaler on command. He reported an unfathomable amount of DC sports suffering, and he did it all with dignity.

He was a giant.

I’ll leave you with Vance and another DC legend, George Michael, busting into pure joyful laughter in this classic clip.

Rest in peace, Jim.
