Late Late Show host James Corden has become must-watch TV most nights on CBS. During a bit early Thursday morning, Corden read off a question from a viewer in Maryland.
And that’s when the English comedian realized the state’s name was a bit harder to pronounce than he originally thought.
James Corden: “This one came from a user from Merry-land. Is that how you say it? Do you say Merry-land?”
Reggie Watts: “Maryland.”
James Corden: “What?”
Reggie Watts: “Maryland.”
James Corden: “Merry-land?”
Reggie Watts: “Maryland.”
James Corden: “Marr. Marr. Marr-land.”
Reggie Watts: “Maryland. Marylyn. Maryland.”
James Corden: “Marr-lan.”
…
James Corden: “But it’s spelled Maryland. And you say like Marr-lan.”
Reggie Watts: “It’s close.”
James Corden: “Where are you from? I’m from Marr-lan.”
Don’t feel bad, James. When I first tried to pronounce Maryland as a kid, I did the same thing. I separated the state name into two distinct noises: Merry – land. Eventually I learned the correct pronunciation too (which in hindsight makes absolutely no sense at all).
Corden also went viral this morning for a bit he did where he acted out all of Samuel L. Jackson’s career with Samuel L. Jackson.
If you’re ever up late, put on Corden. He’s this good almost every night.
