According to Elliotte Friedman, the Caps are ‘closing in’ on a deal with NCAA defenseman Kristofers Bindulis

Four days after inking the University of Alaska-Anchorage’s Mason Mitchell to a two-year entry-level contract, the Capitals are closing in on signing another talented NCAA player.

According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, the Capitals are nearing a deal with free agent NCAA defenseman Kristofers Bindulis. The 21-year-old is six-foot-three inches and 181-pounds.

Bindulis, who has suited up twice for Latvia’s national team, participated in Caps Development Camp last year.

According to Sportsnet, the “raw” Latvian defenseman had one goal and 11 assists in 28 games as a freshman with Lake Superior State University. Prior to the NCAA, Bindulis skated with both the Soo Eagles and Aston Rebels of the North American Hockey League. Bindulis also spent part of the 2014-15 season with the Des Moines Buccaneers of the USHL.

There’s not much about Bindulis on the internet. On Youtube, I found a goal the defenseman scored in the NAHL last year, which was named one of the Top 10 Plays of the Week from Jan. 25th – 31st.

The Soo Eagles also released an interview with Bindulis three years ago.
