Daniel Winnik is ‘In It To Winnik’

Washington Capitals forward Daniel Winnik celebrates two milestones today. First, March 6th is Winnik’s 32nd birthday.

Second, Winnik, according to Ben Raby, will skate in his 700th career game Monday night against Dallas (if Barry Trotz gives him a jersey). This is very significant. Winnik, the 265th overall pick of the 2004 NHL Draft, will become only the eighth player from that draft class to reach that threshold.

To show our appreciation, we wanted to give the unheralded forward a gift he may never have been bestowed before: his very own t-shirt.

You can buy the shirt here and get 15% off your total order if you use the coupon code STPADDY17 during checkout.

This t-shirt designed by Cara Bahniuk is a pun of Winnik’s last name and inspired by the incredible mustache the grinder sported for Movember.

In one short year, Daniel Winnik and his wife Taylor have become fixtures in Washington. Daniel, traded four times during his career, has become a valuable member on the ice with the Capitals’ fourth line, using his speed and overlooked skill to record eight goals this season. Meanwhile, his wife Taylor has become an indispensable member of the community.

Taylor, a photographer, donated her time to shoot the sold-out Caps Dog Calendar this year, which raised thousands of dollars for Homeward Trails Animal Rescue. Two weeks ago, the Winniks inexplicably raised the most money during the Better Halves auction. Daniel and Taylor Winnik’s gift basket, which featured signed liquor bottles from Caps players’ home countries, received a $7,850 bid, beating the baskets of future Hall of Famer Alex Ovechkin and Vezina Trophy winner Braden Holtby.

We raised $51,950 today with the Auction Baskets! Thank you Caps Fans! @MSEFndn @Capitals 🙌🏼💵💰

The $51,950 total was nearly $20,000 more than the team’s total last year. And these are just two of the latest examples of kindness from the family.

So once again: Happy Birthday, Dan! It seems like every player on this iteration of the Capitals is easy to root for and like. But in one short year, you have stepped into the void that Brooks Laich left behind and become almost as memorable.
